A Community of Destiny: New Configurations of Racial Politics in Brazil

The most significant change in Brazil’s racial politics over the past three decades
has been the Black Movement. Since the collapse of the myth there is no longer a hemegomic racial narrative in Brazil. The country’s racial narrative is characterized by conflict. That also is true of Afro-Brazilian narratives which are expressed by a vast array of Black organizations. This essay suggests that in
order to maintain the initiative in the country’s racial narrative and practice,
Afro-Brazilians must keep their political efforts embedded in the Black social
movement.
